About Tanner
Tanner Prairie is a surfboard shaper and designer based out of Costa Mesa, California. Mentored by master shaper Mike Marshall, Tanner creates boards that are a modern take on past eras—focused on trim, glide, and clean, functional design. His approach to shaping is simple and intentional, with an emphasis on timeless aesthetics and performance that feels natural in the water. Surfing is at the center of his process. Most days, you’ll find him at Blackies in Newport Beach, testing boards and refining ideas in real conditions. When he’s not in the water, he’s in the shaping bay at PureGlass in Costa Mesa, working hands-on to evolve his craft one board at a time. Tanner is constantly pushing to improve, staying true to the idea that shaping is an art form meant to be practiced, respected, and carried forward.
About the brand
Tanner California is built on a foundation of surf culture and craftsmanship. Inspired by classic California design, the brand reflects a clean, understated approach—products made to function in the water and transition seamlessly into everyday life. The focus is on simplicity, durability, and pieces that hold up over time, both in performance and style. Behind the brand is a deeper lineage of making. Tanner comes from a family rooted in sewing and custom canvas work in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa dating back to the 1960s. As a third-generation canvas sewer, maker, and designer, he grew up around materials, patterns, and hands-on craftsmanship. That background carries into everything Tanner California creates—from surfboards to trunks. Every piece is approached with the same mindset: thoughtful design, quality construction, and a respect for doing things the right way. This is not fast fashion. It’s built to last, built with purpose, and built close to the ocean.
